Steaming along through summer
Barely half a century ago, the epitome of travel in the Šumava was the puffing steam engine, getting out of breath on the frequent and lengthy ascents of local railways, and sending sharp whistles of the released steam far and wide. This romanticism of steam was gradually lost with the onset of diesel engines, transforming the way people travelled.
However, visitors to the Vimperk region can now re-live those idyllic railway times. Since 1993 a project called "Summer in the Šumava along with steam" has been under way, with nostalgic old-time trains running along the most beautiful parts of the region from the beginning of July till September. The trains are powered with a Class-310 steam engine nicknamed "Coffee-grinder" and run at week-ends from Nové Údolí via Stožec, Černý Kříž, Pěkná, Ovesná, Nová Pec, and Horní Planá to Černá v Pošumaví, and back. At the end of the 2004 holiday season a new route was added, from Nové Údolí via Stožec, Černý Kříž, Volary, Lenora, and Zátoň to Kubova Huť at the altitude of 995 metres.
